Speaker Series: “The Sacred Pipestone Quarries”
The Pipestone County Historical Society will be hosting a speaker series on the Pipestone Quarries.  All presentations will be held at the Historic St. Paul Episcopal Church parish hall (221 4th St. SE) in Pipestone. Presentations begin at 10:00 a.m.  Admission will be $5.00 per person with proceeds to benefit both the Pipestone County Historical Society and Historic Pipestone, Inc.  Dates and topics to be presented include:

  • April 17th: Travis Erickson, local quarrier, carver and demonstrator, will discuss the significance of the Pipestone quarries to the Native American culture.
  • May 1st: Trava Olivier, with the Historical Society, will share the history of the quarry site from the Treaty of 1858 to its creation as a National Monument.
  • May 15th: A ranger from the National Parks Service will discuss the site as a National Monument beginning with its creation and moving forward to today.
 
Masks and social distancing will be required for each of these presentations.
